How to Lock a Linksys Wi-Fi Router

Locking a Linksys router is the process that prevents unknown users from accessing your Wi-Fi connection without your approval. To lock a Linksys wireless router, you will need to password-protect it. It will help prevent unauthorized users from hacking your wireless network and stealing your bandwidth. You can prevent access to your wireless network from hackers in two ways: changing the username and password associated with the Linksys router setup utility and securing the router by requiring a WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) password(see also:How to Reset Admin Password in a Linksys Router). Follow the given steps to lock your Linksys wireless router.

Step1: Open your web browser and enter the default IP address is 192.168.0.1 in the address bar. Press the Enter key to continue.

Step2: In the pop-up box, enter “admin" into the username field and press enter to access the GUI (graphic user interface)-based Linksys setup window.

Enter a new username in the box next to "Gateway User Name" and type a new password in the field next to "Gateway Password." Re-enter the password in the "Re-enter to confirm" box. Click on the "Save Setting" button located at the bottom of the page. When the page reloads, you are prompted to enter the new username and password to gain access to the GUI again. Your Linksys router is secured now.


Step4: To enable the WEP encryption, click the “Wireless" tab on the GUI and then select "Wireless security." Select WEP from the drop-down menu. When prompted, enter your password in the Password field.

Step5: After completing all the steps, go to the bottom of the page and click on the “Save Settings” button. Next time, you will use this password to connect your computer to the wireless network.

Step1: Open any Web browser on your computer, and type "192.196.1.1" into your browser's address field.

Step2: Log in to the router at the prompt by entering "admin" in both the username and password fields that appear, and then click "OK" to enter the router main menu.

Step3: Click on "Automatic Configuration - DHCP" at the "Internet Connection type" field box.

Step4:  Enter the username and password your ISP assigned to you in the respective fields below the "Internet Connection Type" box.

Step5:  Click "Save Changes" to save the router settings. The router connects to the Internet automatically.

Step1: open your web browser and type "http://192.168.0.1” to access the Netgear router's admin menu. Type the router's user name and password. If you haven't already changed the settings, enter "admin" for the user name and "password" for the password.

Step2: Click "OK."  And then click the "Security" option at the left end of the window, and then select "Firewall Rules." Select the "Add" button underneath the "Inbound" heading.

Step3:  Click on the "Any" option from the "Service" list and choose the "Allow Always" option in the "Action" list. Click "Apply" to set the new rule as active.

Step4:  Click on the "WAN Setup" option under “Advanced" heading at the left end of the window. Click the check box labeled "Disable Port Scan and DOS protection."

How to Reset Netgear Router

This is not a difficult problem, so netgear has made resetting and restarting their routers a simple task. Follow the given steps to reset netgear routers.

Step1: Connect all of your devices. Your netgear router should be connected.one Ethernet cable connecting it to your computer and a second Ethernet cable connecting it to your computer's modem.

Step2: Find the reset button on the rear of your Netgear router. The reset button is a small inset button and requires a pointed object to reach it. Use a fine-tipped pen to hold the button down for at least 10 seconds. The test light should flash during this process.

Step3: After completing the above steps, open your Internet browser and enter the Netgear router's IP address into the address bar to access the router's information. Generally, Netgear routers use the IP address 192.168.0.1.

Step4: Attempt to log in to the router with the default username and password. The default username is "admin" and the default password is "password." If the router's username and password were not cleared away, unplug the router and try holding down the reset button. While you are holding down the reset button, plug the router back in.

Step5:  Now log in to the router using the default "admin" username and "password" as the password. You can now reset your information, rename your router and enter your own username and password.
